Migration

Sound work

Materials: Field recordings from Berlin and Scotland, modular synthesis.

Migration brings together field recordings made while walking through Berlin and rural Scotland. Recorded at different times and locations, the environments are layered into a continuous sound field in which footsteps, voices, weather, traffic and landscape move in and out of one another.

Without an accompanying image, the geographical distinctions between the recordings become unstable. Movement can be heard, but its origin, destination and purpose remain unclear. Familiar sounds shift between places, making it difficult to determine where one environment ends and another begins.

The work considers migration through this ambiguity. Walking is among the most ordinary forms of human movement, yet movement across territories is subject to borders, permissions and systems of classification. Migration uses sound to hold these different understandings of movement alongside one another, without illustrating a particular journey or determining who is moving.
