Ocean Refuses No River

2025 - 2026
Audiovisual installation

Field recordings, electronic sound and moving image trace a descent from river to ocean and through its progressively deeper zones. The work considers movement through natural systems alongside the borders and structures humans impose upon them.

Audiovisual work

Biofeedback from a participant’s body modulates recorded voices in real time, shifting their pitch and blurring conventional gender markers. The work explores agency and control through the relationship between body, sound and technology.

A childhood cassette is digitised and stretched from minutes to the length of a human lifetime. Connected to an early experience of loss, the recording becomes a way of exploring memory, duration and what happens when something intimate is translated into digital information.

About

Biography

I’m an artist and designer working across sound, image, installation and technology. I spent more than twenty-five years working in product design, thinking about how people use technology and designing things intended to make that experience better. Over time, I became increasingly interested in the systems behind the things we use, who they serve, and how they shape the way we behave, communicate and understand the world around us.

My art has grown out of those questions. I work with sound, image, data and technology, often taking things out of their usual context or pushing them beyond what they were designed to do. Recent work has explored memory, control, communication, altered states and the body.
