Sōphrosynē

Audiovisual work

Materials: Biofeedback data, recorded voice, performance photography, real-time audio and visual processing.

Sōphrosynē developed from my experience of a consensual dominant/submissive relationship and a question: if submission is actively desired, where does control actually reside?

Developed through a staged performance, the work uses readings from Anne Carson’s The Gender of Sound. Biofeedback from the submissive participant’s body alters the recorded voices of the other participants, shifting their pitch and destabilising distinctions between voice, gender and authority.

The processed sound drives moving images made from photographs of the performance. The bodies distort and merge as the voices change, making the shifting power dynamic visible within the image.

Moving image

The visuals use photographs from the original performance as their source, transformed in real time by the processed audio.
